While corrugated board was used for the first time for making boxes in 1897, then in the 21st century it is impossible to imagine packaging sector without corrugated board packaging.

Types of corrugated cardboard

Two-layered corrugated board

  1. In regular rolls, used for packing goods with non-standard size.
  2. smooth cardboard layer
  3. corrugated layer (layer of goffered paper)

Three-layered corrugated board

The most common material for making packagings.

  1. smooth cardboard layer
  2. corrugated layer (layer of goffered paper)
  3. smooth cardboard layer

Five-layered corrugated board

Used for making packaging for heavy goods.

  1. smooth cardboard layer
  2. corrugated layer (layer of goffered paper)
  3. smooth cardboard layer
  4. corrugated layer (layer of goffered paper)
  5. smooth cardboard layer

 

Flute profiles

Depending on flute thickness E, B, C, BC, BE flute profiles are used (other profiles are uncommon)

  • Profile E - average thickness 1,2mm
  • Profile B - average thickness 3,0mm
  • Profile C - average thickness 4,0mm
  • Profile BC - average thickness 7,0mm
  • Profile BE - average thickness 5,2mm

 

Components

The following components are used for manufacturing corrugated boards:

  • kraft liner for manufacturing the smooth outer layers
  • corrugator for manufacturing the internal corrugated layers

Kraft liner and corrugated layer have different densities (measured in g/m2) – the thicker the paper, the greater the load the corrugated paper can withstand.

Lately the test liner has been implemented in the manufacturing of the smooth layer. The test liner differs from kraft liner by including recycled paper among its raw materials.

Choosing the material

Please pay attention to the following mechanic strength properties for choosing the best material for the packaging depending on the purpose and price-quality ratio:

  • ECT = Edge Crush Test = resistance to edge pressure – the test is performed by applying pressure to sample’s edge and measuring the force required to crush it. Measurements are expressed in kN/m, this value is proportional to storing strength.
  • FCT = Flat Crush Test = resistance to flat pressure, the test is performed by applying level pressure. Measured in kPa.
  • BCT = Burst-Bending Crush Test = bending test measures the pressure required to break the corrugated board (in kPa ).


In addition, you should pay attention to the corrugated board’s thickness (mm) and moisture absorption.
